DAILY DIGEST - Deal reconnects Wired, Wired News

Wired News and Wired magazine are together again after an eight-year separation.

Conde Nast Publications, the corporate owner of seminal San Francisco tech magazine Wired, paid $25 million to acquire the online property Wired News from its parent, Lycos of Waltham, Mass., Lycos said Tuesday.

The two entities, which are already housed in the same building on Third Street near San Francisco's South Park, were sold off separately in the late 1990s when founders Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe lost control of the company. While Conde Nast bought the magazine in 1988 for $80 million, the New York media giant was not interested in the Internet properties, leading to years of frustration for both sides.

Lycos, which went from dot-com darling to relative obscurity, has survived and was last year acquired by Korean Internet company Daum Communications Corp. It acquired Wired News in 1999 for $83 million.

다음커뮤니케이션은 12일 자회사인 미국 라이코스가 뉴스 사이트인 '와이어드 뉴스'를 컨디나스사에 2500만달러에 매각했다고 밝혔다.

와이어드 뉴스는 라이코스의 네트워크 웹사이트로 테크놀로지 과학 등에 관한 뉴스를 온라인으로 제공한다.

양측은 11일(현지시간) 양수도 계약을 체결했다.

매각 대상은 웹사이트 뉴스 콘텐츠 도메인 등 와이어드 뉴스의 자산 일체이며 운영 인력 20여명도 컨디나스에 승계된다.

컨디나스는 오프라인 '와이어드 매거진'을 발간하는 출판사다.

다음 글로벌 부문 대표이자 라이코스 대표인 알프레드 톨레씨는 "라이코스는 앞으로 동영상,사용자 제작 콘텐츠(UCC),커뮤니티 플랫폼 등 핵심 사업에 주력할 계획"이라며 "라이코스 브랜드를 강화하는 것도 목표"라고 설명했다.

라이코스는 지난 6월 TV·영화 등을 주문에 따라 제공하는 '라이코스 TV' 시범 서비스를 시작하며 동영상 서비스에 주력하겠다고 선언했다.

이 회사는 1995년 설립됐고 2004년 다음커뮤니케이션에 인수됐다.
